Arneis

Arneis is a white grape variety. She is very old, low in acidity and was already known in the 15th century under the names Renesium and Ornesio. It is cultivated in Italy, exclusively in the Piedmont, which is why it is also called the " Barolo bianco ". From it the Roero Arneis DOCG wine and in the province of Alba Langhe Arneis DOC wine is produced in the province of Cuneo. Small stocks are also in Argentina, Australia and the United States ( there especially in the state of Oregon but also in Maryland, and in the areas of origin Paicines AVA, Santa Ynez Valley AVA and the Russian River Valley AVA) known.

In the local dialect of Piedmont Arneis means little difficult. It was already considered almost extinct, when it was rediscovered in the 90s of the 20th century and experienced a renaissance ever since. In the past, the variety also served as a co- partner of Nebbiolo. The bestockte surface was in the early 1990s in the province of Cuneo is 55 hectares. In 2006, nearly 600 acres were raised again. Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is white wool hairy, with crimson trace. The young leaves are slightly hairy and woolly from yellow greenish color.
  • The large leaves are thick, three-to five-lobed and deeply sinuate ( see also the article sheet form). The petiole is V-shaped open. The sheet is cut sharply. The teeth are medium in size compared to the varieties.
  • The drum-shaped grape is usually shouldered, medium in size and dichtbeerig. The roundish berries are medium in size and of a yellowish white color.

The Arneis grape variety ripens about 30 days after Chasselas. Makes it one of the late-ripening varieties. It is vigorous and productive. However, it is susceptible to powdery mildew. Newer Klonselektionsprogramme often focus on fungal resistant variants of Arneis. It is a variety of the noble vine (Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting.
