Chancellor (grape)

Chancellor is a red grape variety.

The new variety was created under the breeding number S 7053 from a cross between the Seibel vines S 5163 and S 880, the junction of the hybrid vine was carried out by the French breeder Albert Seibel, who from 1888 to the 1930s, numerous interspecific varieties in the fight against phylloxera bred. It is one of the good quality of the hybrid vines and was, until the 1950s in France very successful. At its height, more than 40,000 hectares were planted with the variety of vineyards Chancellor in France alone. After the ban of hybrid vines by the EU, the areas were abandoned or cleared.

The late-ripening and grew strong variety is very pilzresisent and frost resistant. This explains their popularity at the North American east coast ( in the state of New York, North Carolina ( → Viticulture in North Carolina) and in New England ) and Canada. There are interesting rosé wines in the style of a Clairet or even dark red wines, which mature in wooden barrels made .

Because of their good Pilzrestistenz the variety moved in the breeding of new varieties back into the spotlight. In Germany for example, it was used for the intersection of the varieties Cabernet Breidecker and Cantor, in France it was included in the breeding of varieties Villard Noir and Chambourcin. In Switzerland, there is again a trial cultivation. (0.45 acres, as of 2007, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG )
