Albert Seibel

Albert Seibel (* 1844 in Aubenas, Ardèche, † 1936 ) was a French physician and Rebzüchter in the southern French village of Saint -Julien -du -Serre in the department of Ardèche.

Life

His interest in the new breed of vine originated in 1886, when he went from master baker Eugène Contassot against the background of phylloxera - nuclei of the hybrid vine Jaeger received disaster in France 70. When it was recognized as a cause of massive phylloxera Rebsterbens, crosses between phylloxera- resistant American and European Vitis vinifera varieties were one of the most promising attempts to contain the disaster.

Be Of his approximately 16,000 new breeds or nearly 500 varieties were used commercially on a large scale. Many also found their way into later new varieties ( See also Seibel vines with a list of his most important grape varieties ).

In addition to his extensive work as Rebzüchter he founded in 1895 a school for learning the art of grafting plants.
