Seibel grapes

As Seibel vines are a group of grape varieties that have been developed by the French Rebzüchter Albert Seibel.

The aim of the cultivars was to improve the resistance to frost and fungal diseases and to achieve early maturity. From the rapid spread of phylloxera in Europe threatened the wine production in the late 19th century, they should be an answer. Work Albert Seibel thereby limited to intersections of phylloxera- resistant American vines with European grape varieties, the so-called French hybrid vines. He created about 16,000 new varieties, which were all named and numbered according to the breeder. The numbers start with 1 and end with 19975, but all positions are not filled. Approx. 500 varieties gained commercial importance. His most commercially successful varieties were later given name.

In 1960, the Seibel vines took more than 128,000 hectares of vineyards of France. This corresponds to about 5/ 4 of the total vineyard area in Germany. The American Philip Wagner has from the beginning of the 1940s, many varieties of Seibel Group to America, where they found all along the east coast distribution. After the ban of hybrid vines by the EU, the areas were largely abandoned or cleared. Meanwhile, they are equipped with exceptions of small stocks, mainly, disappeared in the U.S. New York State, as well as in Ontario, Canada and smallest volumes in Europe.

After the varieties for a long time in Europe were almost forgotten is rethinking how in times of organic farming on fungal resistance of these varieties. Because of this resistance can be almost completely waive the vineyard to fungicides.

Seibel vines played today and play again a role in the new variety of grape varieties. They found, for example, input into the successful breeding of Rebzuchtbetriebs Seyve Villard and the Landot vines were for many new varieties of the group used.
