Alicante Ganzin

The red grape Alicante Ganzin is a new breed between Aramon rupestris - Ganzin No. 4 and Alicante Bouschet. The crossing of the hybrid vine was made in 1886 by the Frenchman Victor Ganzin. Aramon rupestris - Ganzin No. 4 in turn is a cross between the wild grape vine Vitis rupestris and Aramon.

The grew weak and low-yielding variety has berries with deep red flesh. The variety is not resistant to phylloxera. The wine is neutral in flavor, but has 46 times more color than the variety Aramon, that belongs to the family of dyers grapes! Therefore, it was as partners for the further breeding dyer grapes ( Teinturier ) - used varieties, for example, in the California (→ Viticulture in California ) varieties Royalty and Rubired, both of which were edited by Harold Olmo. The breeder Albert Seibel they used also for the Seibel vines Seibel 4646, Seibel 5437 and Seibel 6339th

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is spinnwebig hairy and light green. The young leaves are also hairy spinnwebig and copper- colored colors ( anthocyanin ).
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed and deeply sinuate ( see also the article sheet form). The petiole is lyres -shaped open. The sheet is cut sharply. The teeth are set very tight compared to the varieties. In autumn, the foliage turns red.
  • The drum-shaped grape is very long. The oval berries are blue-black color.

Alicante Ganzin is very sensitive to the fungal diseases powdery mildew and downy mildew. It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting. When the wine-growing economic disadvantage is avoided, no return delivered to have male plants grow. Because of the susceptibility to disease but the variety does not matter in the wine.
