West Virginia wine

Viticulture in West Virginia called viticulture in the American state of West Virginia. According to U.S. law, each state and each county is a protected designation of origin by definition and does not need to be recognized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as such.

The 11 wineries (as of 2008 ) spread over 3 origin names which enjoy the status of an American Viticultural Area. Due to the severe winter, the winemakers concentrate on growing French hybrid vines. Important grape variety from the family of Vitis vinifera ( the so-called European noble grapes ) is the hardy Riesling, which is grown mainly in the northeast of the state.
