Great Hall of the People

The Great Hall of the People (Chinese人民大会堂/人民大会堂, Pinyin Rénmín Dahuitang, People's Congress Hall ') is one of the most emblematic buildings in Beijing (PR China). Designed in neo-classical style building is located on the west side of Tiananmen Square and serves the Chinese leadership as a receiving point for state guests and venue for national celebrations.

The Great Hall of the People was built from October 1958 to August 1959 of many volunteers in just ten months of construction as one of the "Ten large building " ( "十大 建筑" ) in the style of "socialist classicism " for the tenth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic. The Great Hall of the People is depicted on the banknotes of the People's Republic of China since the third renminbi series. She was pictured on the back of the then highest bank note, the 10 -yuan certificate. In the current fifth series it appears in red on the back of the currently highest note, the 100 -yuan certificate.

Current

Plans provide for a renewal of the Great Hall of the People in order to reduce energy consumption by 20 %. The work should be completed in three to five years and are part of a major renovation plan in China's capital.

The first commercial pop concert at the Great Hall of the People was held on 11 August 2006. It was organized by Richie Jen and Huang Pin- yuan, two Taiwanese artists.
