Green Hackworth

Green Haywood Hackworth ( born January 23, 1883 in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, † June 24 1973 in Washington DC ) was an American jurist. He studied at Valparaiso University, where he earned a BA degree, and finished his studies at the George Washington University with a Bachelor of Laws. In addition, he received his doctorate from Valparaiso University and the University of Kentucky.

In 1916, he began a career in the State Department. He took over here a number of senior positions, including from 1931 to 1946 as legal adviser of the Ministry under five different ministers. During this time he participated in several international conferences, including as a companion of Secretary of State Cordell Hull at the Moscow Conference of 1943 and a year later., As a member of the American delegation at the conference of Dumbarton Oaks In 1937 he became a member of the American judge panel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in succession by Elihu Root. In 1946 he retired from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and became the first Judge of the United States at the newly founded after nomination by three former U.S. Secretary of the International Court of Justice ( ICJ ) is selected. He worked until 1961 at the ICJ and was during this period from 1955 to 1958 President of the Court.

Green Haywood Hackworth died in 1973 of a heart attack. This was between 1940 and 1944 by him in collaboration with Marjorie Millace Whiteman issued Digest of International Law by Jules Basdevant, advisor to the French Foreign Ministry and together with Green Haywood Hackworth judge at the ICJ, as the most important publication in the field of international law during the period of the Second world War designated.
