Greg Jones (skier)

Gregory ( " Greg" ) Francis Jones ( born December 3, 1953 in Tahoe City, California ) is a former American alpine skier. He specializes in the disciplines of giant slalom and downhill.

Biography

1973 Jones was inducted into the ski team to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, starting in 1974 he participated in World Cup races. The first World Cup points he won on December 18, 1974 the 3- Tre race in Madonna di Campiglio, when he surprisingly finished second in the giant slalom behind the Italian Piero Gros. His second-best result in the season 1974/75 was a fourth place.

Jones ' most successful season was that in the winter of 1975 / 76th Three times he was able to classify in the top five, in which he won the giant slalom at Copper Mountain March 5, 1976. At the Olympic Winter Games in 1976 in Innsbruck, Jones finished ninth in the giant slalom, finished eleventh in the downhill and 19th in the slalom. Overall, this resulted in the third place in the combined score. However, since this was not part of the official Olympic program, he received a bronze medal world championship. In the same season he also won the U.S. downhill title.

In winter 1976/77 Jones could no longer maintain this high level. His only top-10 ranking was the 9th place in the Hahnenkamm in Kitzbühel combination. End of the season he retired from professional racing.
