Gregorio Maria Aguirre y Garcia

Gregorio Maria Aguirre y García Cardinal OFM ( born March 12, 1835 in Pola de Gordón, Spain, † October 10, 1913 in Toledo) was Archbishop of Burgos and Toledo.

Life

Gregorio García María Aguirre resigned after his school years in the Franciscan order and studied the subjects of Catholic theology and philosophy in León. In 1860 he received the sacrament of Holy Orders, and then taught at various seminaries and universities in Spain and the Philippines.

1885 he was appointed by Pope Leo XIII. Bishop of Lugo. He received his episcopal consecration Mariano Cardinal Rampolla del Tindaro. 1894 Aguirre y García was appointed Archbishop of Burgos, in 1899 in addition to the Apostolic Administrator of Calahorra and La Calzada appointed. Pope Pius X took Gregorio Maria Aguirre García 1907 as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Giovanni a Porta Latina in the College of Cardinals, and two years later appointed him Archbishop of Toledo and the Patriarch of the West Indies. In 1911 he sent him as papal legate to the Eucharistic Congress in Madrid. Gregorio Maria Aguirre García died on October 10, 1913 in Toledo, and was buried in the local cathedral.
