Grip ( and grip, Holmen ) is an island to the northwest of Kristiansund in Norway. On it is the eponymous former fishing village. The island and its surrounding islets and rocks are sometimes summarized as " archipelago " grip.

Archipelago

The archipelago consists of 82 small islands grip and rocks in the North Sea, 14 kilometers northwest of Kristiansund. Only the largest island Grip Holmen is habitable. In the south of Holmen Grip is the harbor, which is protected by two breakwaters. More Breakwaters protect the village from the ocean waves. The highest point is only 10 meters above sea level.

The Lighthouse of grip, grip fyr, in 1888 on the nearby island Bratthårskollen, north of grip rails, built. The 44 meters high, cast-iron lighthouse stands on a brick foundation and is the second largest in Norway. Its light can be seen 19 nautical miles. From 1947 to 1986 here a radio station was operated.

Since 1977, the lighthouse of grip is unmanned, since 2000 he is a listed building.

Fishing village

First signs of colonization of grip from the 9th century, settled as a fishing near the fishing grounds. During the monopoly of the Hanseatic League, the export of Norwegian fish into a major industry was.

The Trondheim dealer Hans Hornemann bought the island in 1728 by King Frederick IV and made the fishermen in principle to vassals. The fishermen had to sell it to the dealer to catch at any price. The dealer bought most private possessions.

In the years 1796 and 1804, large parts of the village of storms were destroyed.

The population of grip fluctuated depending on how profitable was fishing, between 100 and 400 inhabitants. In the high season have up to 2000 people on the island live. When the municipality grip was incorporated into Kristiansund on 1 January 1964 Grip had 104 inhabitants. The population grew steadily, however, and in December 1974 left the last inhabitants, Hildur and Kaspar Larsen, the village.

In summer, the abandoned village is a popular tourist resort. Up to 250 people every year to spend their holidays here. A high-speed ship combines grip in the summer once or twice daily in 30 minutes Kristiansund and there are regular slower ships. Diesel generators produce 7-23 clock electricity, a radio tower in Kristiansund enables mobile phone use. The former school now acts as an inn and post office.

Stave Church

Grip Stave Church was probably built around 1470. She stands at the highest point of the island. 1621, the church was rebuilt and restored in 1933.

The church is used now only every third Sunday. A priest from Kristiansund then holds a service for the tourists. Since 1635 no priest lives in more grip.

Since the soil on the island is rocky, there is no grip on the cemetery. Deceased therefore had to be taken to a cemetery on the mainland, mostly to Bremsnes on Averøy.

Commune

In the course of democratization in 1897 the commune (municipality ) Grip was founded. However, the Company initially remained feudalistic. 1909 bought the municipality of the village of Ludvig Williamsen. The dealer from Kristiansund had until then the whole town, down to the school, church, and three houses owned. The purchase price of 110,000 Norwegian kroner was deposited by a loan. In the following period, the municipality sold the homes to its residents.

The municipality Grip comprised 0.48 km ², making it the smallest municipality in Norway.
