The Great Zschirnstein ( 561.74 m) is the highest mountain in the Saxon or German part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

Origin of the name

The name seems to derive from the Slavic root word for black.

Location

At Great Zschirnstein there are two climbing peaks, Great and Little Zschirnsteinturm. There is also the climbing route south wall (IV ), which ends at the highest point of the mountain. This climbing route is one of the three exceptions to the Saxon climbing rules, which climbing is prohibited at massifs in general.

At the southern tip, next to the lookout point was since 1865 a Nagelsche column. She reminded August Nagel, the chief surveyor in Saxony in the 19th century. The survey was carried out in the triangulation. Further triangulation points of interest were among others on the space mountain, the stone roses, the Cottaer Spitzberg and the High Schneeberg. The column on the Great Zschirnstein was lost in 1900. In May 2011, the reorganization of a copy was made.
