The GROßVENEDIGER, the " old world majesty " is the strongly glaciated peaks of the main Venedigergruppe in the Hohe Tauern on the border of East Tyrol to Salzburg. With a height of 3657 m above sea level. A. ( foot summit cross ) or 3662 m above sea level. A. (highest point of the snow surface ), it is the fifth highest mountain in Austria and the fourth highest located entirely on Austrian territory.

Name

The name GROßVENEDIGER was first mentioned in 1797 in a report of a Grenzbeschau. Until then, the mountain had been designated as supporters head. About the origin of the name are unclear, he shall be derived from by pulling dealers, the Venetians. The distant view to Venice is an often mentioned, but refuted theory.

First ascent

A first Ersteigungsversuch existed before 1828 by Paul Rohregger. He reached the Venedigerscharte from the Untersulzbachtal. On August 9, 1828 failed due to an avalanche an expedition of 17 men, including Archduke Johann, in an attempt to reach the summit.

It was not until 40 years after the first ascent of the Grossglockner reached on September 3, 1841, led by Josef Schwab group to the summit. Also present were, inter alia, Ignaz von Kürsinger, Paul Egger tube and the doctors of Ruthner Anton and Franz Spitalerstraße. Starting point of the ascent was Neukirchen am Großvenediger. The path led through the Obersulzbachtal on the Stierlahnerwand. Of the 40 men involved anyhow reached the top 26, the other stayed behind because of fatigue. From Kürsinger, who was heavily involved in the expedition, also dates the term old world majesty.

Normal routes to the summit

  • From the north-west of the Kürsingerhütte ( Rise of the Sulzau about Berndl and Postalm ).
  • From the east of the New Prague Hut ( rise over Matrei Tauern house, Innergschlöß and Old Prague hut)
  • From the South from the Defreggerhaus ( climb over the Prägratener district Hinterbichl and Johannishütte )

All normal climbs on the GROßVENEDIGER are technically not difficult, but it involves full swing, the lead over split -rich glacier terrain. Depending on the conditions, the columns are sometimes difficult to detect and provide with touring a risk;
