Guigues I of Albon

Guigues I Levieux ( Veteris Vetus, the old man ), " Dauphin " called (* 1000, † 1063 to 1070 to at Cluny ), Count of Oisans, Grésivaudan, and Briançonnais. Son of Guigues d' Albon and Gotelana de Clérieux.

After George de Manteyer he scored the first so-called Dauphin of Viennois, though this title was not formally introduced until a century later. Although the gentry, he managed to expand his property between the Rhone and the Alps. 1016 he is documented as a " count " of Moirans, 1027 Champsaur, 1035 Oisans, 1050 Grésivaudan 1053 Briançonnais, and in 1070 he gained possessions in the valley of Oulx.

From 1035 on, he was always mentioned with the title of count. It is not known how Guigues came into possession of the lands attributed to him, but his grown influence enabled him to install family members as a bishop. Guy's uncle de Guigues was bishop of Grenoble and was able to pass the succession to his cousin malls. His brother was Bishop of Valence and the Palace of the Archbishop of Vienne, the most famous church in the province was in the hands of in-laws cousins.

According to the European pedigrees, he married Adelaide of Turin, younger daughter of Count Otto of Savoy and Adelaide of Susa. For the connection to the sons Humbert, who was bishop, and Guigues II have emerged, but this is impossible because Guigues II was born in 1025, his alleged grandfather Otto of Savoy but not until 1030. Perhaps this was Guigues but I. married to an older Adelaide of Turin.

In his last years, Guigues moved back to Cluny in Burgundy, where he died in 1070.
