Gunnora

Gunnora was the mistress, and perhaps wife of Richard I, Duke of Normandy ( 933-996 ) from the house of Rolloniden.

Biography

According to a report by Robert Torignis following Gunnora married the Duke Richard only under Danish law (More danico ), but not according to the Christian rite. However, the marriage seems to have been legalized to 980/990 in the Christian sense.

Among the wives of the Dukes is one of the few that have played a significant role. After a controversial thesis Eleanor Searle Gunnora comes from one of those Scandinavian families who had settled until the time Richards in eastern Normandy, and therefore the marriage marked an alliance between the now long-established Normans and the newcomers (see FitzOsbern ), whose rise they promoted by forces. However, it is not certain that Gunnora actually came from the eastern Normandy. After the death of Richard's 996 Gunnora seems to have exercised de facto reign over the Duchy.

The historian Dudo of Saint- Quentin indicates many of his information, which he tells in his De Gestis Normannaie ducum to have received directly from Gunnora.
