Gunther Behnke

Gunther Behnke ( born January 19, 1963 in Leverkusen ) is a former German national basketball players. The biggest success of the 2.21 -meter center was winning the European Championship in 1993.

Behnke, who began as a teenager in Pulheim near Cologne with the basketball, debuted in the early 1980s for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. He stayed afterwards the German record champions eleven years faithfully and won in this period five German championships ( 1985, 1986, 1990-1992) and four -time national cup competition (1986, 1987, 1990, 1991). With 317 inserts Behnke is a record player of the Bayer Bundesliga teams, the 2008 game operation ceased. In 1985, he was drafted at position 8 in the same year as his former teammate Detlef Schrempf from the NBA team Cleveland Cavaliers in round 5, but never completed a game in the NBA.

In the years 1992-1994 Behnke continued his Bundesliga career at TuS Bramsche. He then moved to Alba Berlin. He belonged to the team that in 1995 the Korac Cup and thus the first German team won a European club competition. His last professional station were from 1996, the Telekom Baskets Bonn, with whom he the play-off final of the German Cup reached twice, but lost each against his former club Alba Berlin.

Between 1983 and 1995 he completed Behnke total of 146 caps for the German national team, where he scored 702 points. He participated in the 1992 Olympic Games, two World Championships and four European championships.

Behnke was one of the longest players who ever stood on the floor in the Bundesliga. His specialty was the blocking of opponent throws.

After the 1999/2000 season Behnke ended his career. By his own testimony he now has " complete with basketball ."
