European Championship triumph under coach Pešić (1987 to 1993)

Following the resignation of coach small Svetislav Pešić 1987 took over as national coach, who had previously won as a coach of a particularly talented Yugoslavian youth team at Toni Kukoč, Vlade Divac and Dino Rađa the U19 World Cup in the same year. In this epoch-making triumph for the first time a selection of the United States was defeated under the same conditions, as the Lord the U.S. national team took only college players aged not more than 23 years. After a missed at the Olympics for the 1988 games success four years later posed for a Pešić as national coach after the successful Olympic qualification. With NBA professional Schrempf and has returned from the NBA in the German Bundesliga, Christian Welp could be achieved at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona seventh place.

In the following European Championship finals again in 1993 in their own country the German team without NBA All-Star Schrempf succeeded to this day the greatest success. It profited from the breakup of the dominant European basketball nations Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, whose teams had previously taken since 1947 together won 19 of 23 European Championships and were the only European nations already become the World Basketball Champion. During the " rest" Yugoslav team of Serbia and Montenegro had been excluded due to the Yugoslav wars of the tournament, the previously leading teams distributed on the new participating teams in Russia, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. After three wins and three defeats in the preliminary and intermediate round, the German team beat Spain could scarce with 79:76 in the extension of the quarterfinals. Welp secured in the semifinals with a successful long distance throw in the last minute a 76:73 win over Greece, which had 1987 in their own country yet become European champions. In the final against Russia, which was held at the Olympiahalle Munich, Christian Welp resembled the last German attack after pass from Kai first to Nuremberg from 70:70 to transform 3.9 seconds before the time a free throw to 71:70 Final. Captain Hansi Gnad, who was later a long- time most capped player, could stretch a winner's trophy for the first time at an official tournament finals in the height and Welp for the national title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament was awarded. The German team was chosen by the German sports journalists "Team of the Year." Then Pešić resigned from his position as national coach back in favor of an activity as a club coach of ALBA Berlin, which he led to the first European Cup win in 1995 and a German club team to five consecutive German Championships from 1996.

From sporty hole to the first World Championship medal (1993 to 2003)

Pešić Serbian countryman and successor as national coach Vladislav Lucic remained unlucky in his time with the national team from 1994 to 1997. His Finnish successor Henrik Dettmann then benefited from the maturation of an exceptional player, who was to become today 's best and most successful German basketball player Dirk Nowitzki, who with 19 years as one of the few European players to without significant experience in senior or college basketball from 1998 Milwauckee Bucks drafted into the NBA and was getraded it to the Dallas Mavericks, was to become not only the dominant and most important player of his NBA club, but also lead the German national team to new levels of success. Symbolic for the changing of the guard in the German Basketball Nowitzki had his first NBA action against the team of Detlef Schrempf, who had previously managed the first who grew up in Germany players made it into the highest remunerated professional league. As a " franchise player" of the Mavericks, he woke with his successes for club and country new enthusiasm for basketball in Germany and the German national team. After had been naturalized in the 1980s already the German -born Canadian Mike Jackel, who went in the National Basketball League on basket hunting and 1993 had also become European champion in his last national tournament, received the born in Germany Shawn Bradley for the first time an NBA player and teammate of Nowitzki with the Mavericks German citizenship. In Bradley's only participation in the finals with the German national team in 2001, the Germans were just a second away from the feeder in the semifinals of the European Championship finals against hosts Turkey to the final, as the Turkish team brought the game with a " buzzer beater " in the extension. Turkey won and the demoralized Germans also lost with EM- finals top scorer Nowitzki the small final and landed on the unfortunate fourth place. 2002 made Germany to gain recognition in the world Championship in Indianapolis. Difference of Nowitzki's game spurred the German team only in the semi-final against favorites Argentina, who had previously beaten not only Germany but also the uninspired host USA in the first round, with 80:86 of. In the match for third place, the Germans were able to defeat New Zealand with 117:97 and won the bronze medal, the first medal at a World Cup. Dirk Nowitzki was voted MVP of the tournament. A year later, at the 2003 European Championship but the team suffered a setback and missed qualifying for the 2004 Olympic Games by a 84:86 defeat in the second round against Italy.

Completion of the era under coach Nowitzki peasant (2003 to 2011)

After missing Olympic qualification was Bauermann new national coach, who had been interim basis, led the national team in 1994 for a short time. The former Leverkusen master trainer and Bamberger club coach brought the team a new impetus and a shiny DOMICILED Dirk Nowitzki led the selection as top scorer in the final of the European Championship finals in 2005, but which was clearly lost 62:78 against Greece. Nowitzki was, however, the award for best pitcher again named MVP and the silver medalist was as in 1993 the title of " Best Team of the Year " by the press. In the Basketball World Championship 2006 in Japan, Germany won all group matches with the exception of the game against the eventual champions Spain. In the knockout phase, the Germans first played in a balanced game against a surprisingly competitive Nigerian team and won in the end with just under 78:77. In the quarterfinal game against top favorite United States, the German team was able to keep about two quarter and were behind only one point. After that, the Americans turned on, however, and the game ended 65:85. In the classification matches, there were then two defeats against France and Lithuania and it ended up in eighth place.

In the European Championship finals in 2007 Germany reached in the preliminary round group after only one defeat against the favorites Lithuania progress to the second round. There was enough after only one victory over Italy just for the quarter-finals. In the round of eight teams, the Germans had against world champions and hosts Spain no chance and lost hands down with 55:83. In the classification matches, it was enough time for the German team after two wins to one fifth. In order for the national team failed to qualify for a qualifying tournament for the 2008 Olympic Games. Before the Olympic qualifiers the DBB and the organization of the National Basketball League agreed on a separation of offices coach and premiership football club coach, so coach builder man initially gave up his job as a club coach after the season. In the last qualifying match of the Olympic qualifiers in 2008 for 3rd place in the qualifying tournament, the national team managed to qualify as the last team for the Summer Games after a 96:82 victory over Puerto Rico. Nowitzki was thus able to meet together with his colleague Chris Kaman NBA naturalized the dream of Olympic participation. At the Beijing Games Nowitzki was honored as the first German basketball player to be standard bearer of the German athletes at the opening ceremony. In the Olympic tournament in 2008 the national team three defeats against Greece, Spain and hosts China as well as the highest tournament defeat suffered by an upbeat victory over Angola at all with 57:106 against defending champion United States. So you already retired from after the Olympic preliminaries.

After the 2008 Olympics, Nowitzki is concentrated after fulfilling his Olympic dream on his duties as a player with the Mavericks and Chris Kaman stood as the national team is not in the European Championship finals of 2009. A significantly rejuvenated national team, whose recruitment problems had been covered by the qualities of Nowitzki in recent years held, with surprisingly well and achieved respectable results in Poland. In the last intermediate round match there were at the shortage 68:70 defeat to Croatia even more chances of reaching the quarter-finals. So it remained, however, with only one win in six games, which is not enough in itself to participate in the following 2010 World Cup. The World Federation FIBA could, however, still available "Wildcards " and Germany got one of these qualifications " byes " to move with this apparently NBA star Nowitzki to participate in the World Cup finals in 2010 in Turkey. However, this said, from the participation and the national team missed out after a surprising victory extension to kick off on Vice European champion Serbia after a disappointing defeat against African champions Angola qualified for the second round.

In the following European Championship finals in 2011, it now came to qualifying for the 2012 Olympics. Nowitzki reached 2011 for the first time the NBA championship with the Dallas Mavericks and was named Final MVP. Later, he was not only again after 2005 honored as basketball player of the year, FIBA Europe, but also the first individual basketball players of Germany Sportsman of the Year 2011. Buoyed by the success with the Mavericks, he joined again for the national team in order to achieve a further part in the Olympics. Together with Chris Kaman he came after the long NBA season but was late for EM preparation of the national team. In view of the Olympic qualification were also other European teams such as Spain, France, Russia, Turkey and host Lithuania peppered with several current or former NBA pros. After a mixed first round with two defeats in five games to hit at the major incident round group on all these teams except for Russia, and it was enough for the little experienced squad with a form weak Nowitzki only to a victory against Turkey, which the Board before the quarter-finals and meant for the Olympic qualifiers. Nowitzki then gestured to his retirement from the national team and coach peasant, who had previously reached with the second-division team of FC Bayern Munich ascension, entered in favor of his post as a club coach from his position as national coach back.

Reconstruction ( since 2011 )

In summer 2012, the national team had to take efforts in 2013 at the Olympic Games in order to qualify for the European Championship finals. For this task, the DBB again won Svetislav Pešić as national coach who successfully led the team without NBA stars and unbeaten through qualifying. Subsequently, however, he did not renew his contract in the fall, but also replaced at Bayern Munich his predecessor peasant, who had previously been dismissed in the pre-season, or its interim basis officiating, previous assistants Christopoulos. As a successor to the office of the national coach of the DBB undertook the long-standing youth and junior team coach Frank Menz.
