2002 FIBA World Championship
The 14th World Basketball Championship was held from August 29 to September 8, 2002 in Indianapolis in the United States instead.
The national team of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which started as the defending champion, was the second time world champion. Vice world champion was the team from Argentina. Third place went to Germany.

The games were at Conseco Fieldhouse, home of the NBA's Indiana Pacers, as well as in the RCA Dome, home of the NFL teams Indianapolis Colts discharged.

Preliminary round

The preliminary matches in Groups A to D were held from 29 to 31 August 2002. The top three teams in each group reached the second round. The fourth-placed team in each group reached the round to seat 13-16.

The intermediate round matches of the groups E and F were held from 2nd to 4th September 2002. The results obtained in the preliminary round against group opponents were taken. The four best teams in the groups reached the quarter- finals, the last two reached the round to seat 9-12.

Most valuable player
As a Most Valuable Player of the tournament the German Dirk Nowitzki was awarded. In a total of nine games, Nowitzki scored 216 points, which corresponds to an average of 24 points per game.
Team of the Tournament
Besides the German Dirk Nowitzki of the Argentine Manu Ginóbili, the Yugoslav Predrag Stojaković, the New Zealander Pero Cameron and the Chinese Yao Ming were voted into the All -Tournament team.
