Gurkovo

Gurkowo (also written Gurkovo, Bulgarian Гурково ) is a city in Southern Bulgaria. It lies in the Oblast Stara Zagora, 30 km north-east of Stara Zagora, 3 km north of Nikolaewo.

Gurkowo is the administrative center of the homonymous municipality Gurkowo.

In the 19th century Gurkowo had the double name Chajnito (also Chainito or Chaineto ) and Kuloptschin. From Chajnito also the old name of the Chainboas Mountain Pass, Pass of the Republic today is derived. Kuloptschin was renamed in 1906 in Gurkowo and wore from 1940 to 1947 the name of General Gurkowo. Gurkowo in 1974 a town.

The city is named after General Joseph Gourko, under whose leadership 1877, the city Stara Zagora was occupied by the Russian troops in the Russo- Ottoman war.

Geography

The city is located in central Bulgaria, in the eastern part of Rose Valley, sandwiched between the mountain ranges of the Balkan Mountains and the Sredna Gora.

Through the territory of the municipality Gurkowo the rivers Tundscha, Radowa ( Bulg Радова ) and Lasowa flow ( Bulg Лазова ). Furthermore, there is the reservoir Schrebtschewo ( Bulg язовир Жребчево ), which accumulates the Tunscha. This reservoir is the third- largest in Bulgaria, Kladenez after the reservoirs Iskar Reservoir and students.

Community Gurkowo

The municipality covers 292 km ² Gurkowo has 11 settlements with a population of 5441 (15 September 2010). The municipality was created in 1997 as a new independent administrative unit.

Through the territory of the municipality lead two highways:

  • Prohod na Republika connects ( Bulg Проход на Републиката ), which crosses the Balkan Mountains and north to south Bulgaria
  • Awtomagistrala A1 " Trakia ", which connects Sofia with Burgas.

Parallel to Awtomagistrala A1 " Trakia " runs the Vorgebirgsbahnlinie ( Bulg подбалканска железопътна линия ).

Economy

The largest and most important operation in the city is Bulmetal ( Bulg Булметал ), which establishes as a market leader in Bulgaria metal packaging - for the food industry ( canned ), chemical industry ( color packaging, spray bottles, cans ) and the cosmetic industry. Another important sector is the felling, partly for export, and wood processing.

The distance to major commercial and administrative centers of the environment is 40 to 50 miles: Stara Zagora, Kazanlak, Nova Zagora and Veliko Tarnovo.

Others

In the town there is a museum dedicated to the donkey, which is still widespread in rural Bulgaria. Every year, a donkey race with donkey carts is performed, which takes place mostly on 3 September, which is also the " Feast of the Rose" and where the beauty contest "Miss Rose" is performed.

The Folkolorefestival The Balkans sings and tells ( Bulg Балканът пее и разказва ) is performed on an annual rotating basis in six cities, except Gurkowo still in Helena, Dryanovo, Kotel, Twardiza and Tryavna.
