Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne
The Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne is the Symphony Orchestra of Cologne, founded as Cölner Municipal Orchestra, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary in the current 2013/2014 season.
History
Namesake of the orchestra is the former concert hall, the Gurzenich. Since 1986, the orchestra is based in the Philharmonic Hall.
In the tradition of a cathedral, the history of the orchestra goes back to the 15th century. Founded in 1827 "Concert Society " organized " winter concerts " from which emerged since 1857, the " Gurzenich concerts ". The existing throughout the 19th century stadtkölnische theater orchestra was taken over in urban services in 1888.
Since the season 2003/2004 the Cologne Music Director Markus Stenz is next to the Cologne Opera also responsible for the Gürzenich Orchestra. Since the beginning of season 2012/2013 is James Gaffigan, Chief Conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and a regular guest conductor of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in Hilversum, principal guest conductor of the Gürzenich Orchestra.

Awards
The orchestra was 2010 winners in the innovation competition 365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas Deutsche Bank. Excellent has been since mid-October 2005 existing unique offer GO live! concert recordings on CD or download to an MP3 player about five minutes after the final applause.
