Gus River

Location of Gus ( Гусь ) in the catchment area of the Oka

The Gus (Russian Гусь ) is a 147 km long left tributary of the Oka in the European part of Russia.

Course

The Gus rises in the south of the Vladimir Oblast about 20 km south-southeast of the city of Vladimir. From there it flows to the south and reaches approximately 15 km of the city Gus Chrustalny.

Further south through the river flows then the densely forested and marshy Meschtschora low level.

Just before the confluence of Tikor and Dandur it reaches the border of the Ryazan Oblast. Here he turns to the southeast before it opens at Gus- Schelesny in the Oka.

The name Gus corresponds to the Russian word for goose. This popular etymological explanation of the word meaning, for example, reflected in the coat of arms of the riverside town of Gus- Chrustalny in which a stylized goose is shown. Presumably, the terminology has been derived from the Finno-Ugric word kuusi for spruce; the -carrying Meschtschora - depth plane in which these and other conifers are widely used, was inhabited in historical times by a called by the Russians also Meschtschora Finno -Ugric tribe.
