Gustav Tschermak von Seysenegg

Gustav Tschermak, Edler ( April 19, 1836 * in Littau, Moravia, † May 4, 1927 in Vienna) was an Austrian mineralogist of Seysenegg.

Life

Gustav Tschermak, the son of Ignaz Mark, he wrote still Czermak (1791-1864), 1848 attended high school in Olomouc Tschermak was from 1868 professor in Vienna. His research interests were the chemistry of silicate minerals and meteorites. In 1864 he discovered the principle of isomorphous replacement. He founded in 1871 the journal Mineralogical Mittheilungen. Above all, the two teachers Schwippel Karl (1821-1911), geologist, and Julius Schmidt, astrologer, given his continued interest in geology. Politically, too, to Tschermak operated already in the high school years, he founded a society for the cultivation of the German language. From this time he wrote inspired by the usual spelling Tschermak today.

In 1856 he entered the University of Vienna to study. Here were the two professors Josef Redtenbacher in chemistry and Eduard Fenzl, who later became his father was, in botany, the most important teachers, while the geological knowledge appropriated mainly autoditaktisch.

In recognition of his scientific achievements, he was charged in 1906 by Emperor Franz Joseph I in the hereditary nobility and received the title of Noble Seysenegg. His sons are the physiologist Armin Tschermak - Seysenegg (1870-1952) and the botanist and plant breeder Erich Tschermak - Seysenegg ( 1871-1962 ). As a founding member of the Mineralogical Society, he was its first president and in 1907 was appointed Honorary President Honorary Member and 1911.

He is buried in an honorary grave dedicated to the Döblinger Cemetery (Group MO, number 90) in Vienna.

  • In 1935, Gustav- Tschermak -Gasse was named after him by the Viennese districts Dobling ( 19th district ) and Waehring runs ( 18th District ).
  • The Austrian Academy of Sciences awards the Gustav Tschermak - Seysenegg price.
  • A mineral is named after him tschermakite.
