Gustav Veit

Aloys Conrad Constantin Gustav Veit ( born June 3, 1824 in Leobschutz, † April 20, 1903 in Deyelsdorf ) was a German gynecologist and obstetrician.

Life

The son of a pharmacist educated at the universities of Breslau, Berlin, Heidelberg and Halle medicine. He earned his doctorate at the University of Halle in 1848 with the work observationum de sanguinis quantitate nuperrime institutarum recensio. As an assistant, he worked subsequently at the maternity hospital in Halle and Berlin. Gustav Veit habilitated in 1853 in Berlin and was appointed the following year as chair of obstetrics at the University of Rostock, where he was also director of the midwifery educational institution. 1864 Veit joined as director of the Department of Obstetrics at the University of Bonn. At his request, accompanied him Karl Schroeder ( 1838-1887 ). After Alfred Hegar Veit was the fourth President of the German Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics. 1893 Veit became Professor Emeritus.

In his article about the best method for extraction of the next child's head Veit described the Veit- Smellie - handle, a technique to support the birth in the presence of a breech presentation, which was named after him and the Scottish obstetrician William Smellie. This technique has already been before Veit by Jacques Guillemeau in De l' hereux accouchement des femmes (1609 ) justified.

Vitus son Johann Veit (1852-1917) was also a professor of gynecology and obstetrics.
