Recognition as 11 Penchen Lama

This group was with the approval of the Chinese government and the Tibetan government in exile in contact and asked the Dalai Lama in writing to participate in the selection process. The end of 1994, the search team sent him a detailed list with photos of the candidates; but as this in May 1995 without consultation with the search team in Tibet and with the Chinese government Gendun Choekyi Nyima ( Tib: dge 'dun chos kyi nyi ma) declared the 11th Penchen Lama, the Chinese authorities rejected this, the contact was stopped and on 29 November 1995 was Gyeltshen Norbu by the search team in Tibet determined by drawing from the "golden urn " in the Jokhang in Lhasa as the reincarnation of Lama Penchen and received the religious name Chokyi Gyelpo ( Erdeni Lobsang Chokyi Champa Lhundrub Gyelpo ).

Urn drawing

The system of the urn contraction, that is, a degree of control by the Chinese Government regarding the provision of reincarnations of the Dalai Lama and the Penchen, was introduced in 1792 under the Qing Emperor Qianlong, many years after the 7th Dalai Lama in the wake of the 1720 against the Dsungars had been installed in Tibet indented army. In 1808, the Chinese government allowed the Tibetans to determine the 9th Dalai Lama without the urn draw, but although the real impact of the Qing Dynasty was greatly reduced in 1840, the urn was born in 1841 and 1858 are used.
