György Gurics

György Gurics [ ɟørɟ ɡuritʃ ] ( born January 27, 1929 in Dunapentele, † September 10, 2013 ) was a Hungarian wrestler and bronze medalist at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki.

Career

György Gurics began as a teenager in his hometown with the rings. In 1946, he went to Budapest and became a member of TE Budapest. In 1950 he moved to Budapest Honvéd. The military personnel developed under the leadership of coach Lajos Keresztes ( Ringer ) and Mihály Matura an outstanding wrestler in two styles. In 1951 he was first Hungarian Champion and was nominated for the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. There he fought at middleweight, free style, and won the bronze medal with three wins.

After this outstanding international debut followed in 1954 with a 6th place at the World Championships in Tokyo at middleweight, free style, a slight disappointment. In 1955 he was in Karlsruhe for the first time at a World Cup in Greco-Roman wrestling at the start and was there with five wins runner-up. Only the sovereign Georgian Giwi Kartosia who competed for the Soviet Union was able to defeat him.

At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956, which took place shortly after the Hungarian uprising, Gurics finished after two wins and a renewed defeat Kartosia middleweight Greco-Roman style of the 5th Place.

1957 World Championships were in free style on the plan. Gurics launched at the World Championships in Istanbul for the first time in the light heavyweight division. It did not succeed him here, to place themselves in front of the field. In 1958, he wrestled Greco- Roman again at the World Championships at home in Budapest. In the light heavyweight division he scored it five wins before losing the final against the Soviet athletes Rostom Abashidze. At the World Championships in 1959 in Tehran Gurics retired after the 3rd round.

Gurics was but after these disappointments on and ended up in 1961 at the World Championships in Yokohama by winning the world title in the light heavyweight Greco-Roman style, the biggest success of his career. After a sixth place at the World Championship in Toledo / USA in the Greco-Roman style, Middleweight, he again won a bronze medal at the World Championships in 1963 in Helsingborg. Then he ended his international career Ringer.

György Gurics was with the German exception Ringer Wilfried Dietrich one of the last all-round expert on the mat, which reaped great success in two styles.
