Habiganj District

Habiganj ( Bengali: হবিগঞ্জ জেলা, Habiganj Jela ) is an administrative district in northeastern Bangladesh, which lies within the Sylhet Division, the parent administrative unit. The district capital is also called Habiganj.

The 2636.58 km ² large district is bordered to the north by the district of Sunamganj, on the east by the districts of Sylhet and Moulvibazar, to the south by the Indian state of Tripura and on the west by the districts of Brahmanbaria and Kishoreganj.

The main rivers are the Khowai, Sutang, Korangi, Kalni Khshiyara, Gopala, Ratna and the Barak.

Although Habiganj was established in 1874 as an administrative subunit of the District of Sylhet, he received in 1984 the status of an independent national administrative district. Habiganj is divided into eight so-called Upazilas: Ajmiriganj, Baniachang, Bahubal, Chunarughat, Habiganj Sadar, Lakhai, Madhabpur and Nabiganj. Within this administrative subdivision, there are four self-governing cities ( municipalities ), 77 Union Parishads (village councils) and 1241 villages.

Agricultural main products are rice, tea, wheat, potatoes, jute, betel nuts and oily seeds. As the most common fruits are mangos, jackfruit, bananas, pineapples, lychees, coconuts and limes. The main export products include rice, tea, betel nuts and bamboo.
