Hakkı Başar

Hakkı Başar (* September 24 1969 in Sakarya ) is a former Turkish wrestler.

Career

Başar grew up in Istanbul and did not start until the age of 17 in 1986 with the rings. He joined the Istanbul Ringer Club " Ithisas Spor ". He was trained at the time of Ata Karatas. Hakkı wrestled exclusively in the Greco- Roman style. Later he joined the Club " Böyökzehir Belediye " Istanbul, where he oversaw the coach Ibrahim Yildirim. Already at the age of 18 he began his international career with a victory in the Balkan Games in 1988 in Romania. He wrestled back in the middleweight division. In 1989 he finished 7th in the Junior World Championships in Budapest. He denied then in the years 1990 and 1991, some international championships, but could not place it in the front of the field itself. However, the Turkish Wrestling Federation held the loyalty and Hakkı nominated for the 1992 Olympics, because it was recognized that a lot of potential inside him.

Then at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona Indeed, he managed to break through. It provided excellent light heavyweight fights, defeated the Russians Gogi Koguaschwili and lost the battle for the gold medal only the German Maik Bull man. The silver medal was the reward for his good fights.

Also at the European Championships in 1993 in Istanbul, he defeated Koguaschwili, but failed this time to the Swedish surprise Jörgen Olsson, but still won the bronze medal in the light heavyweight division.

In 1994 he suffered a performance-related setback when he was only the 13th place and even only in 15th at the European Championships in Athens at the World Championships in Tampere. At the European Championships in 1995 in Besançon, he started in the heavyweight division, but could not prevail and there was only seventh.

At the World Cup 1995, he then scored his first major victory. He was world champion in the light heavyweight division. Its main competitor Gogi Koguaschwili was eliminated before the final, in which Hakkı Petru Sudureac from Romania sure hit.

In 1996 Hakkı was in turn less successful. After a 12th place at the European Championships he reached at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in the light heavyweight but still the 5th Place.

The year 1997 brought a Gewichtsklassenneueinteilung by the International Wrestling Federation FILA. Light heavyweight and heavyweight, so far up to 90 kg and 100 kg body weight, were merged into a new weight class light heavyweight who went body weight to 97 kg. It met in this weight class now, the former light heavyweight and former heavyweight. The competition in this new weight class was therefore very large. Nevertheless Hakkı succeeded equally in the spring of 1997 a huge success when he became European Champion in Kouvola / Finland, where, however, some of the recent Stars missing the old weight classes. He defeated Anatoli play in the final Fedorenko from Belarus. In the fall it was enough at the world championships in Breslau, where for the first time were all pros from the former weight classes at the start, only the 10th place.

After all, he won the European Championships 1998 in Minsk again a bronze medal. In the following years he indeed reached at international championships still some good rankings, but he won no medal. Disappointing for him the end of his career, namely the third participation in the Olympic Games in 2000 in Sydney. He finished there, only the 16th Place.

After the end of his active career Başar completed a coach training and is now working as a coach for the Greek -Roman style in the Turkish Wrestling Federation. He also operates a sports and fitness facility.
