The Germania was the first of the six yachts that were built in the 20th century for the Krupp family.

History

This schooner yacht should be the wedding gift of Bertha Krupp to her husband, Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach. It included according to the will 99.9975 % of the company Krupp. The Germania was built on the private yard Krupp Germania Werft in Kiel in just six months after a design by the renowned yacht designer Max Oertz and in 1908 its launch by floating dry dock in the shipyard. The concept for the construction of the first Germania was voted strongly national. You should be the first German yacht in the highest performance class of the schooner, the " German from keel to flag button" ( the highest point of the mast top ) was. Designed by a German engineer, built by a German shipyard and equipped with German materials and equipment to be finally successfully sailed from German teams in regattas. The national proud claim could be almost fully implemented, because it was found in the sail loft of William Mählitz in Berlin even a supplier for a total of 19 different cotton canvas, which was the traditional sailmaker Ratsey & Lapthorn in England equal. The masts of Douglas fir wood did have to be procured from the U.S., since no suitable timbers were found in Germany in the required lengths and qualities. The three meteor - yachts of Emperor Wilhelm II to the appearance of the Germania in 1908 were designed in America and Britain both have also been built and sailed by a foreign team.

The hull was built as an absolute novelty entirely of stainless steel and their sailing skills were so revolutionary that they by 1914 won many German racing regatta in their time of 1908, although it below deck - was very homely expanded - the contemporary taste accordingly. There was a living room with fireplace, dining room, ladies room with piano, master double cabin, three guest cabins, cabin servant, fair and cabin for the captain and mates, kitchen, crew quarters ( bow). A driving machine was not installed. In the harbor, the yacht was on a private mooring buoy. In lulls or canal trips tug assistance had to be requested.

Krupp had let be Kaiser Wilhelm dream of leading Yachtbaunation truth, and so he served the Emperor his Germania as a sparring partner for the meteor to, connected with tangible own economic interests. During the summer regatta in Cowes Germania was by far the race to decide donated by Kaiser Wilhelm II Cup for themselves. With an average speed of 13.1 knots she beat all previous records. The British press paid tribute to the achievements of the Germania highest recognition. While Krupp always the last one pulled out when racing against British opponents of the yacht, he practiced in race against the emperor often most humble restraint. The Germania was against the meteor always a few seconds behind. The ambitious Wilhelm II could be quite unforgiving at defeats his yacht. Krupp also exercised financial restraint in supply and settlement of the Meteor Meteor IV and V, which was built at the Krupp Germania shipyard in Kiel, Wilhelm II. In invoiced construction costs of 587 771 gold marks for Meteor IV, a gain of 95.31 Goldmark for the shipyard remained. The Germania was charged with 704,024.41 gold mark against Krupp and the shipyard recorded a profit of 64002.20 Goldmark ( material costs: 421,997.80 Goldmark, wages: 85901.42 Goldmark, Supplements: 132,122.99 Goldmark ).

When war broke out in 1914, the Germania in the preparations was surprised at the Cowes Week regatta of the political events in the Solent, seized by UK Customs in Southampton as a prize and put up for auction. When exes they went under new ownership to the East Coast of the United States.

After the Germania ( exes and Half Moon later) had gone through several hands, it fell in 1930 in a storm and had to be abandoned. It became a shoal northwest of Key Biscayne, Miami -Dade County ( Florida), driven and there fell (Position: 25 ° 43 ' 37 "N, 80 ° 8' 5" W25.727069444444 - 80.134627777778 ). It was declared by the government to the underwater monument and thus stands under monument protection. For scuba divers, it is a popular destination.

Germania Nova

In spring 2011, reports were published together with photos in the German press, showing an externally almost life-size replica of the Germania of 1908. The ship was built mainly in the Spanish shipyard Factoria Naval de Marin in Vigo on behalf of a German owner and is run as Germania Nova under the flag of Antigua in May 2011 from the stack. Furthermore, operation in Vorpommern Peenemünde and two Dutch specialist firms in the construction involved. Work on the reconstruction began under the direction of German designer Detlev Löll spring of 2009 in secret. They were massively complicated by the fact that no original construction plans exist anymore. Because of photos, articles in journals, models and their model building plans were planned a yacht that will be characterized by special faithfulness to the original. Due to security and comfort aspects and by the acceptance requirements of Germanischer Lloyd in accordance with the provisions of the British Maritime and Coastguard Agency, some changes have been made: small variations in the structure, the use of a modern anchor, the installation of air conditioning, modern navigation electronics, extendable Bow and installation of a ( relatively small-scale ) marine diesel engine with 300 kW of power. The ship is operated by 13 crew members and can offer 10 guests.
