Halls Gap

Halls Gap is a place in the Grampians National Park in the Australian state of Victoria. The village has only 300 inhabitants (as of 2006 ), but is a tourist center of the Grampians. After the Great Ocean Road Halls Gap is the place with the second highest number of daily visitors throughout Victoria.

Geographical Location

Halls Gap is located approximately 250 km west of Melbourne, in the Fyans Valley at the northern narrow passage between the Mount William Mountain Range, which closes the Grampians to the east, and the Wonderland mountain range in the central part of the Grampians. In Halls Gap the Mount Victory Road branches off to the northwest in the direction of the Grampians Horsham Road, which runs through the interior of Victoria as part of the connection from the coast the Grampians in the longitudinal direction. History

In the original inhabitants, the Aborigines of the tribe of Tjapwurong, the place was called Mokepili.

The first European settlers at the site was Charles Browning Hall. This sought in 1841 for a pasture for his cattle after he realized that the old cattle market of Port Phillip, there was an oversupply. Following paths of Aborigines he finally reached the relatively water-rich site.
