Hamilton, Tasmania

Hamilton is a small town in the center of the Australian state of Tasmania. It is located 73 km north-west of Hobart on the Clyde River and is the administrative center of the Local Government Area Central Highlands Municipality. At the 2006 census the population was found to be 300 ..

The city lies on the Lyell Highway (A10 ), which connects to Hobart and the west coast of the island. The Hollow Tree Road ( B110 ) creates the connection after Bothwell, the nearest major city to the northeast.

Governor Lachlan Macquarie named the settlement Sorell Plains, later she was called by the inhabitants of the area as well Macquarie or Lower Clyde. Governor George Arthur in 1824 then gave her the name of Hamilton.
