Hariprasad Chaurasia

Hariprasad Chaurasia (Hindi: हरिप्रसाद चौरसिया, Hariprasad Caurasiyā; born July 1, 1938 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh ) is an Indian master of the Bansuri flute. He is responsible as a composer for several film scores and soundtracks.

Life and work

His father was a wrestler, his mother died when he was four years old. He started learning vocal music at the age of 15 years at his neighbor Pt. Rajaram. Later he moved to the flute under the guidance of Pt. Bholanath of Varanasi. Years later, while working at All India Radio, he received support from the Surbahar - player Annapurna Devi, the sarod player Allauddin Khan 's daughter.

In 1986 he played with Zakir Hussain, John McLaughlin and Jan Garbarek an album Making Music. The album, released under Zakir Hussain at ECM have referred to critics as "one of the most inspired albums ever recorded with East-West Fusion".

In 1997, he played as a guest musician with Shakti Remember Shakti on tour; the live album Remember Shakti appeared in 1999 The Verve Music Group.

Chaurasia is the artistic director of the Department of North Indian classical music of the Conservatory of Rotterdam.

He has received several state awards including Sangeet Natak Akademi Award one (1983 ), Padma Bhushan (1992) and Padma Vibhushan ( 2000). In 2014 he was honored for his life's work with the honorary award of the Prize of the German Record Critics.
