Harlem Désir

Harlem Désir ( born November 29, 1959 in Paris ) is a French politician of the Socialist Party (PS ) and their party leader (French Premier secrétaire ).

Curriculum vitae

Désir is the son of a Martiniquaners and an Alsatian. He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne and founded the association SOS Racisme, which he was president until 1992. Prior to his election to the European Parliament deputies he has also worked as a radio journalist and in publishing. He was also editor of a monthly newspaper and coordinator of a network of seven countries represented in European organizations that provide housing for youths.

From 1989 to 1994 and from 1997 to 1999 he was a member of the Council for Social and Economic. 1997 Harlem Désir also stood as a candidate for municipal elections in Aulnay -sous -Bois. Since 2001 he has worked as a municipal council in Aulnay -sous -Bois.

Harlem Désir was elected in June 1999 for the first time to the European Parliament and re-elected in 2004 and 2009. He was between 2004 and 2009 Vice- President of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, and is in the running Mandatur a member of the Commission on International Trade. Since 2009, Harlem Désir is member of the Committee on International Trade and the Delegation for relations with India in the EU Parliament. As a deputy, he has worked in the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Delegation to the Cariforum -EU Parliamentary Committee and the Delegation for relations with Japan.

Harlem Désir was considered a " number two " in the party hierarchy of the Parti Socialiste. On September 12, 2012 was proposed as Chairman of the Party, Harlem Désir by the outgoing chairman of the PS, Martine Aubry and Prime Minister Jean -Marc Ayrault. The choice Désirs was as safe as the proposal was supported by almost all leaders of the Parti Socialiste. On October 18, 2012 Harlem Désir was chosen in a primary election as chairman. He received 72.5 percent of the vote, his rival candidate Emmanuel Maurel 27.5 percent.
