Harry Hibbs (footballer)

Henry " Harry " Edward Hibbs ( born May 27, 1906 in Wilnecote / Tamworth, † April 23, 1984 in Hatfield / Hertfordshire ) was an English football goalkeeper and graduated 1929-1936 25 caps for the England national team.

Hibbs learned to play football in the domestic clubs Holy Trinity Wilnecote and Tamworth Castle, before he was eventually hired as a professional in April of 1924 at FC Birmingham as an amateur and only a month later.

He played in the following years, 389 games in the First Division for Birmingham and was at the age of 23 years for national team of his country. He made his debut in a 6-0 win against Wales at Stamford Bridge and was until 1936 England's first-choice goalkeeper. He also took part in an overseas trip to South Africa and played in a selection of the Football League three games. In addition, Hibbs was later active for Bristol City.

Hibbs was passed in 1940 with a charity match against Aston Villa, the first during the Second World War, officially.

In August 1944, Hibbs was coach of FC Walsall and remained there until its replacement by Tony McPhee in June of 1951 in the office. During this time the club with Dave Massart and Duggie Lishman had two exceptionally good offensive player. Walsall lost in 1946 in the Third Division South, the final at Stamford Bridge for the promotion to the Second Division in 1947, leaving the fifth and following the 1948 third place.

In February of 1953 Hibbs returned as an active soccer player and played until May 1954 when FC Havilland. He then became involved again in the coach compartment and looked after 1960-1961 the club Waretown and a year later to 1963 Welwyn Garden City.

In 1984, Hibbs died, shortly before his 78th birthday, in Hatfield.

  • Hibbs ' cousin Harry Pearson was also an England international goalkeeper and completed on April 9, 1932 in a 3-0 win against Scotland his only game. Also, Pearson's father, Hubert Pearson was appointed once in the English selection, but could not play due to injury.
