Hearts in Atlantis is a feature film by director Scott Hicks from the year 2001. It is based on motifs of the novel Atlantis by Stephen King.

Action

The film tells the story of Robert (Bobby ) Garfield, a middle-aged man, of his youth rolls up again at the funeral of his childhood friend Sullivan ( Sully ), especially those experiences that he had in the summer, when he was eleven years old. During this time he and his two friends Johnny Sullivan and Carol Gerber had experienced many adventures together. Particularly exciting was the encounter with an older traveler named Ted Brautigan for the three. Bobby's fixed onto itself mother Liz Garfield liked the fewer and fewer.

Bobby lives with his mother, who receives Ted Brautigan as a lodger at the house. While his mother is always busy with herself and her job, Ted begins to take Bobby under his wing. The two begin a friendly father -son relationship and build it soon becomes clear that Ted has some sort of telepathic or telekinetic force a little rubs off on the boy soon, but is also mysterious agent of interest.

Bobby, Carol, and Sully come again and again to the city Hooligan Harry Doolin each other, Ted, however, can sell even at a more or less random encounter by reading his thoughts and finds out that this only covered with his vigorous appearance that he has secretly transvestite tendencies and likes to wear women's clothes.

Carol is injured but later Harry out of revenge. When Ted tries their einzurenken the dislocated arm back, Bobby's mother Liz comes home and draws the wrong conclusion, Ted mistreat Carol. She looks but on its plan to turn on the police when they confronted Ted indirectly with the thoughts of ill-treatment by her boss, who had previously done on one of their seminars.

When Bobby has to consult with his mother tells his father's friend to the agents, he runs away from home. Despite his warning, Ted is eventually arrested by the agents, as Bobby Ted picks $ 2,000 profit from a bet for him. When Ted is gone, Bobby is found that with it the ability is gone, to recognize other people's thoughts.

Awards

Anton Yelchin won in 2002 the Young Artist Award. Willroth hair, Mika Boorem and the film was nominated for the same price.

Piotr Sobociński was nominated in 2002 for a Golden Satellite Award posthumously. He won the 2001 Bronze Frog of the Polish festivals CamerImage and was nominated for the Golden Frog.

Low success

The film played in the cinemas of the United States at an estimated budget of 31 million U.S. dollars, only about 24.2 million U.S. dollars.
