Heidelstein

The Heidelstein, between Bishop home at the Rhön in the Bavarian district Rhön- grave field and Wüstensachsen in the district of Fulda, in Hesse, is a 925.7 m above sea level. NHN high -Bavarian Hessian border mountain in the High Rhön, a part of the German low mountain range Rhön, with peak location in Bavaria. Part, its main peak is also called Swabia sky ( see Section mountain height and summit ).

On the Heidelstein are the transmitter Heidelstein and a memorial of the Rhön clubs. On the northwest slope of the source of the Ulster and on the western slope, the trail Rotes Moor lies.

Geography

Location

The summit region of Heidel stone is in the northwest of the Franconian district of Rhön- grave field. About 350 m north-west of its summit, the border with the county of Hesse Fulda. The mountain is located in the Rhön biosphere reserve and on the border of the Bavarian Rhön Nature Park in the southeast and Rhön in the northwest. Approximately 4.6 km north of the mountain is Wüstensachsen ( chief town of Ehrenberg, Hesse), 8.2 km east-southeast of the nucleus of the market Oberelsbach (Bavaria), 6.5 km south of the nucleus of the city of Bishop Home at the Rhön ( Bavaria ) and 6.5 km (each air line ) west of the nucleus of the city Gersfeld ( Hesse).

Rhine -Weser watershed

About the Heidelstein the Rhine -Weser watershed runs. At its northwestern flank springs the Ulster, which flows into the eastern Weser- source river Werra. Rises on the eastern slope of the Els ( Elsbach ), which opens into the litter. On the southern slopes arise from the special, which will flow to the Els, and the black creek that empties into the Brend; the three last-mentioned rivers belong to the basin of the Rhine.

Mountain height and summit

From the western main peak ( 925.7 m) of the Heidel stone whose height is usually given at around 926 m, absorbs about 1 km long back to the 912.6 m high east summit. In the official topographic maps can be found for both peaks of the name Heidelstein and for the eastern summit, the term Swabia sky. Deviating designated the official leader of the Rhön clubs only the eastern summit as Heidelstein, the higher main peak, however, as Swabia sky. About 130 m northwest of the main summit is a trigonometric point on 923.3 m in height.

Nature Spatial allocation

The Heidelstein heard in the physiographic feature unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35), in the main unit Hohe Rhön ( 354) and in the subunit center Rhön ( 354.1 ) for the natural environment Lange Rhön ( 354.11 ), with its landscape to the northeast into the main part of this area leads on to the South in the natural environment Ostabfall the Long Rhön ( 354.12 ), to the west in the natural aquatic environment Kuppenrhön ( 354.10 ) and north into the natural environment Upper Ulstertal ( 354.13 ) drops.

Reserves

Lying On the Bavarian areas of Heidel stone parts of the nature reserve Lange Rhön ( CDDA-Nr. 7005; reported in 1982; 32.91 km ² ) with north-northeast of the mountain gelegenem focus and on its situated in Hesse northern flank of the NSG boiler Rain ( CDDA-Nr. 82056, 1940, 31 ha). In the Bavarian side, parts of the Protected Landscape Area Bayerische Rhön are ( CDDA-Nr. 396113; 959.8 km ²), of the Fauna- Flora-Habitat area Bayerische Rhön High ( FFH-Nr. 5526-371; 192.6 km ² ) and the bird sanctuary of the same name ( VSG-Nr. 5526-471; 19.029 km ²). On Hessian are those of the LSG Hohe Rhön ( CDDA-Nr. 378 482 in 1997; 44.2 km ²), of the FFH area Hochrhön ( FFH-Nr. 5525-351; 48.09 km ² ) and the Rhön VSG (VSG - No. 5425-401; 360.8 km ²).

Flora

The northwestern, western and southwestern edge of the Heidel stone are covered with forest, its hilltop is largely deforested and forested its eastern flank only in deeper regions. In some places the rare Türkenbundlilie growing and near the memorial there is a small incidence of wild lily of the valley.

Transmitter Heidelstein

On the Heidelstein the transmitter is located Heidelstein of Deutsche Telekom. Your 218 m high guyed steel tube mast was built in 1969. It broadcasts TV and FM radio programs. 2006, the broadcasting analog TV programs in favor of DVB- T has been set.

Hiking and view options

About the Heidelstein lead sections of several long-distance paths such as Rhön- Rennsteig hiking trail, Heidel Steinweg ( HWO 5) and Hochrhöner and European long-distance hiking trail E3 and E6 European long distance path. The fastest way to the summit area can be reached from the north car park Schorn hedge. The Heidelstein is a popular vantage point. From its forest-free areas there are various views in all directions, including south to Kreuzberg ( 927.8 m) and with excellent panoramic view to the west to the Great Feldberg ( 881.5 m) in the Taunus, north to the Hohe Meissner ( 753.6 m) or east to the Thuringian Forest.

Rhön Club Memorial

On the Ostkuppe of the mountain is a memorial of the Rhön clubs, where every year on the third Sunday of September, many members gather and remember deceased hiking companions. In the immediate vicinity of the Memorial, a cross from the chain-link fence of the former border between East and West Germany stands as a reminder of the conquered division of the country.

Transport links

Via the eastern slopes of the Heidel stone a part of the section Fladungen Bishop Home ( part here of the Bavarian State Road 2288 ) runs approximately north-south direction of the Hochrhönstraße which the main road with the B connects 285 (Northeast) 279 (south). From the B 279 branches at home from the Bishop B 278 west past the mountain leads north to Wüstensachsen. From there, the L runs 3395 (Hesse), which merges into the St 2286 ( Bavaria ), where the crosses of St. 2288, after Obereselbach.
