The Catholic parish church of the Holy Spirit is one of the oldest surviving church building in Munich.

History

Probably in 1208, Duke Louis I of Kelheimer a hospital, which was right outside the old city wall in front of the Talburgtor. At this hospital was a Romanesque chapel, which was dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. This chapel was probably already in the founding of the hospital. The first mention of it is in the protective letter of Pope Innocent IV of 1250 for the hospital as " ecclesia sancti spiritus de SWM ", so the Holy Ghost Church Munich, probably in reference to the name of the hospital. Otherwise, it is referred back to the 14th century St. Catherine's Chapel.

After the elevation of the Holy Ghost Hospital for the third parish in Munich in 1271, the chapel became a parish church of the hospital.

The great fire of 1327 also destroyed the hospital, including St. Catherine's Chapel. The result is a Gothic building in the manner of a Bavarian church hall with ambulatory and 9/16-Abschluss the east choir. Last architect was Gabriel Ridler, who completed the church in 1392.

1724/30 the Holy Spirit Church was Johann Georg Ettenhofer and the brothers Asam Baroque style.

After secularization in 1806 the hospital was torn down to make room for the Viktualienmarkt. 1885/88 Advanced Franz Löwel the church for three bays to the west. The steeple of the choir in the east of the church commemorates the upstream construction of Spitales. 1907/ 08 there was a fundamental reconstruction, in which the southern vestibule was added. 1944/45, the Holy Ghost Church was destroyed by air raids to the outer walls. My reconstruction began in 1946 and is still not complete. The consecration of the high altar was made in 1955. Asam Since 1973, the frescoes, the high altar and the entire interior to be reconstructed under the direction of Erwin Schleich.

Organ

The present organ was built in 1977 by Ludwig Eisenbarth as a house organ for a Roman Villa, and then purchased as a makeshift for the Holy Ghost Church. The abrasive loading instrument has 27 stops on two manuals and pedal. The play and Registertrakturen are mechanical. The previous instrument of 1921 had 79 registers on 4 manuals and pedal. There are plans to build a space the size of the corresponding new large instrument.

Bells

The slim tower houses four bells. The big bell is the oldest of the Geläuts and carries on the flank of a representation of the Holy Spirit. Since 2012, a fourth bell fills the empty remaining Gefach of the belfry; she was hung on May 27 ( Pentecost Sunday ) in the tower. Your name pretzels rider bell is reminiscent of the medieval tradition of pretzels rider of the Holy Spirit Hospital. On the edge following inscription is cast beneath a large pretzel: ESURIVI ENIM ET DEDISTIS MIHI Manducare SITIVI (Mt 25:35).

Saturdays by 15 clock is rung of Sunday. For all trade fairs are the large bell 15 minutes before a character, 5 minutes before the start of measurement is zusammengeläutet with all the bells. The only exception is the ringing in the Eucharist on Holy Thursday evening. This is rung for 10 minutes. Besides ringing the big bell three times daily (morning, noon and evening) the angel of the Lord on Fridays at 11 and 15 clock (cross- acceptance and hour of death of Jesus).
