Formation

After Lennon had released his album Mr. Jordan in 1989, he was in his own words in an emotional depth: "I had only once come to terms with myself. Before, I never wanted to be compared with my famous Beatles father, right depression had therefore, was short even in psychological treatment. Now I am at my home and I am just the way I am. " Lennon separated from his producer Patrick Leonard and committed instead the Canadian Bob Ezrin. Ezrin and Lennon decided, contrary to the titles of the first three albums Valotte, The Secret Value of Daydreaming and Mr. Jordan to address less relationship problems.

" It was time to write about other things that interest me. [ ... ] It was a kind of exorcism. There were some problems I had to solve. Mental, emotional difficulties, which made me very unhappy. [ ... ] On the album you can not find answers or solutions. For me it was just a matter of all of these things let out -. A self-help therapy "

Lennon withdrew in a former gas station in the San Fernando Valley, where he wrote for eight months every day of songs for the new album. Overall, the work took on the album 18 months.

The cover shows a simple sketch of a winking smiley -like face. The right image in the eye was replaced with a photo of an eye, from which a tear flows. The photo was taken by Mark Hanauer.

Criticism

The youth magazine Bravo called Help Yourself as Lennon's " previous masterpiece. [ ... ] Julian pulled all Arrangierregister. "

Rolling Stone called Help Yourself as a " major step forward" in Lennon's musical development. The album was both in terms of Lennon's voice as well as individual titles " Beatlesque ", so remember the beginning of Saltwater than Strawberry Fields Forever and the content of Imagine while Maybe I Was Wrong bonds seem to take on Penny Lane. On the other side are pieces like Rebel King, New Physics Rant and Keep the People Working clear experimental and unconventional. Content rich album of private confessions to Global Policy and Lennon mastering the balancing act between two extremes.
