Many songs on the album were accompanied on piano ballads, and even though the album was not very varied, but the music is melodic and well-crafted - and would get more praise when she would not come from the son of a Beatle.

Rolling Stone wrote that Photograph Smile is an intimate, simple album. It sounds like the work of a man who had made peace with the ghosts of the past and now finally begin again to write new melodies, even if the album is not going to revolutionize pop music.

The mirror designated Photographer Smile of a plate with " very much Julian, very little John, but also very little ideas " while WOM said that Lennon had with Photograph Smile " presented his best album, an emotional look back at his life ."
