Henry I, Count Palatine of Lotharingia

Henry I († July 29, 1060 in Echternach monastery) was Count Palatine of Lorraine from 1045 to 1060. He was the son of Hezzelin, Count of Zülpichgau, and nephew of the Count Palatine Ezzo. The Count Palatine Herman I was his grandfather. Of the historians he was assigned the same number of epithets: firstly furiosus ( the madman, but also the madman ), because he at the castle Cochem murdered his wife on July 17, 1060, and Monachus ( monk ) because he sent the monastery was to be treated his state of mind.

To 1048, he married Mathilde of Lorraine, daughter of Gotzelo I, Duke of Lower Lorraine from the family of Wigeriche and sister of Pope Stephen IX. His only child was Hermann II, who succeeded him as Count Palatine of Lorraine 1064.

The first signs of his mental illness appeared shortly after 1058, after which he was forced to visit the monastery Gorze for treatment. However, he escaped from Gorze when he heard that his wife had started an affair with one of his relatives came to Cochem and killed his wife with an ax. Henry was then permanently locked into the monastery, this time to the monastery of Echternach, where he died. His property and his office were taken in trust by Anno II, Archbishop of Cologne as guardian of Henry and Matilda's son Hermann, Hermann until 1064 succeeded his father as Count Palatine.
