Henry Liddell

Henry George Liddell (* February 6, 1811; † January 18, 1898 ) was a British philologist and lexicographer.

Life

Liddell came from the family of the Baron of Ravensworth; his father, Sir Henry Liddell, was the younger brother of the title heirs and Tory politician Sir Thomas Liddell. Henry George Liddell was educated at Charterhouse School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he completed his degree in 1833 with honors. He gained his degree in 1838.

He was head of Westminster School 1846-55, 1870-74 Vice- Chancellor of Oxford University.

Liddell married on July 2, 1846 Lorina Reeve, with whom he had ten children. Alice Pleasance Liddell your daughter (1852-1934) served as the inspiration for Lewis Carroll whose story Alice in Wonderland.

Services

Liddell wrote next to a History of Rome ( 1857) with Robert Scott Greek - English Lexicon, the, whose first edition was published in 1843. Five more editions appeared in 1845, 1849, 1855, 1861, and 1869. The work presents a parallel is to the Latin Dictionary by Charlton T. Lewis and Charles Short. The last edition, which saw Liddell, 1897 was the eighth. To date, the lexicon has been revised many times and not just in the English-speaking world an important dictionary.
