Henry Owen

Henry Owen ( * 1716 in Dolgellau, Merionethshire, † October 14, 1795 in Edmonton ) was an Anglican cleric and Christian theologian from Wales. Its probably the most important contribution to biblical scholarship is the discussion of the time of composition and the form and nature of the design of the four canonical Gospels. It is controversial whether have his thoughts on the development of the Griesbach hypothesis, the theory of Johann Jakob Griesbach about the origin of the Synoptics, contributed.

Life

Owen attended from 1736 to Jesus College, Oxford. There he made in 1739 his Bachelor (BA ) in 1743 and a master's degree (MA), while at the same time devoted himself to mathematical studies. Then he focused on medical issues. He gained the appropriate BS ( 1746 ) and doctorate (1753 ) and practiced for three years as a doctor. However, according to self-reported health considerations and the personal inclination prompted him to devote himself entirely to the academic studies and pastoral tasks.

1746 Owen was ordained a deacon and priest in the Anglican Church. His contemporaries recognized his scholarship. So he held from 1769 to 1771, named after Robert Boyle lectures.

1760 Owen married Mary Butts, the daughter of an Anglican bishop. The couple had one son and four daughters.

Although neither Owen nor Griesbach mention a personal meeting, it is still conceivable that the two had known each other. Because Griesbach had visited for the completion of his undergraduate studies England, and on a list of books of his estate is Owen's pioneering work Observations on the Four Gospels mentioned.
