Henry VIII the Sparrow

Henry VIII of Glogau (also Henry VIII " the sparrow "; * 1357/63; † March 14, 1397 in Sprottau ) was from 1369 to 1378 ( with his brothers ) Duke of Sagan and ( ducal ) Glogau and from 1378 onwards to 1397 Duke of Frey city, Green mountain and Sprottau and from 1394 until his death in 1397 the Duke of Sagan and Duke of Glogau.

Origin and family

Henry VIII came from a branch of the Silesian Piast Glogau. His parents were Henry V " the Iron " († 1369 ) and Anna († 1363), daughter of the Duke of Waclaw Płock. Between 1382 and 1388 he married Catherine ( † 1420 ), daughter of the Duke of Opole Władysław II The couple had children:

Life

When his father's death in 1369, Henry V, Henry VIII and his older brothers were Henry VI. the Elder. and Henry VII " Rampold " not yet of age. Therefore, they were placed under the guardianship of the Duke of Legnica Ruprecht I, who in 1372 married her widowed sister Hedwig already. When the resulting inheritance disputes of Legnica Duke Ludwig played a mediating role. He was a brother of her deceased father, and accomplishing that apart from a division of whose posthumous areas first. Although 1378 was but one division, but since Henry VIII's brothers died without issue in 1393 or 1394, was the entire property, which combines up to half Guhrau that had to be delivered to Oels from 1394 under Henry VIII.

Through his marriage to Catherine of Opole Henry VIII was to be entitled to Oberglogau and Prudnik. Although he was invested with this, he did not get permanently in their possession.

Henry died in 1397 following an accident at a jousting tournament. Since his sons were not of age, they were, like their father, placed under the guardianship of her uncle Rupert I of Legnica.
