Herbert S. Walters

Herbert Sanford Walters ( born November 17, 1881 in Leadvale, Jefferson County, Tennessee, † October 17, 1973 in Knoxville, Tennessee ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party. He was a member from 1963 to 1964 the United States Senate as a representative of Tennessee.

Life

Walters graduated from the Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon; then he studied at Carson -Newman College in Jefferson City and the University of Tennessee. He embarked on a career in the banking industry.

Policy

Politically, Walters operated for the first time from 1934 to 1936 as a deputy in the House of Representatives from Tennessee. Later he became a member of the State government in which he served as Commissioner of Highways.

After the death of U.S. Senator Estes Kefauver was appointed on 20 August 1963 as the interim successor in Congress Herbert Walters by Governor Frank G. Clement; at that time he was already 81 years old. This was considered to move the Governor to themselves later take the place of all probability not seek reelection antretenden Walters. The venture failed, however, because Clement was defeated in the primaries of the Democratic Party.

Herbert Walters spent his time in the Senate inconspicuous; mostly he stood in the shadow of Albert Gore, the more senior senator from Tennessee. He supported most of the legislative initiatives of President Lyndon B. Johnson, who had taken over the office of the assassinated John F. Kennedy three months after Walters ' appeal. However, he agreed as most senators from the Deep South against legislation to the civil rights such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
