Geography

Hergensweiler lies in the Allgäu region or Westallgaeu. There is only the district Hergensweiler. Hergensweiler is the smallest municipality in Bavaria with only 2 km wide.

History

Hergensweiler was, as some neighboring communities, around the year 800 AD founded. It was named after a Alemanne called Heriger. The place was a ruler of the free imperial city of Lindau and was awarded the Prince of Bretz home as a part of the newly formed Principality of Lindau in the kingdom in 1803. This reversed it in 1804 to Austria, which it had ceded to Bavaria in 1805. Ecclesiastically the village belonged to the secularization of monastery vineyard.
