Herman de Vries

Herman de Vries ( born July 11, 1931 in Alkmaar ) is a living in Lower Franconia Dutch visual artist.

Life

Herman de Vries visited from 1949 to 1951, the Kingdom of Horticultural School in Hoorn and then worked as a farm laborer and gardener in France and the Netherlands. From 1961 to 1968 he was assistant at the Institute for Applied Biological research in nature. He lives in Knetzgau ( Eschenau ) since 1970.

1953 de Vries began to work as an artist, and he had 1954 first solo exhibition. The mid-1950s he painted informal pictures, 1956 emerged the first white collages, 1959, the first white image. Such as Jan Schoonhoven, 1959 by Armando, Henk Peeters, Kees van Bohemia and Jan Henderikse the Dutch Informal group was formed, which became the group nul since 1960, he was close to ZERO. Work of De Vries were shown in 1962 at the exhibition curated by Peeters nul Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In the same year, the first aleatoric works were created.

1961 gave de Vries, with Armando and Henk Peeters, the first issue of nul = 0 out, the second number ( April 1963 ) with Peeters, the numbers 3, 4 in 1963 and 1964 alone. From 1965 to 1972 edited the Revue de Vries intégration. From 1991 onwards, published six issues of a new integration - journal for plant spirit moving and culture, edited by Wolfgang Bauer.

De Vries joined since 1961 with a variety of activities in public spaces eg in Arnhem, Dusseldorf, Biel, Hagen, Marl, Bamberg, Amsterdam, Rosenheim, Nuremberg, Munich, New York, Enschede, Kaiserslautern, Hamburg, Berlin, Bremen, Stuttgart, Erfurt and at the Skulptur.Projekten in Münster.

Major exhibitions of his works were recently in Würzburg (2005 ), Vienna ( 2005), Amsterdam (2004 ), Bremen (2003), Stuttgart ( 2003), Karlsruhe ( 2003), Hagen (2002) and Dusseldorf (2002). His work has been shown in Skulptur.Projekt, Münster and at the Venice Biennale and Lyon. He was in 1984 from here - represented two months new German art in Dusseldorf.

Position

De Vries created paintings, collages, text, pictures, sculptures, artist's books, installations and public art. Furthermore, de Vries wrote many contributions to art theory.

Today, the nature and especially the world of plants, both in botany as well as in medicine, folk medicine and mythology play a central role in his work. To his comprehensive artistic exploration of the plant world also includes experience with the psychedelic properties of plants.
