History and Research

The Mittweida was established on 7 May 1867 by Carl Georg Weitzel and local businesses as a private pilot ( Technicum Mittweida ) and 1900 was the largest private engineering school in Germany. In 1935 it was converted into a school of engineering and was from 1969 a School of Engineering ( Engineering College Mittweida, IHM). The graduate degree is from 1976 from 1980 was the right to award doctorates.

The professional focus shifted from mechanical engineering from the turn of the century to 1951, electrical engineering / electronics, the electronics technology.

In 1901, were at the school the teaching factory workshops, founded in 1904 from the precision workshops Mittweida GmbH (" Accurate "). This practical guidance is still a feature of the college. Based on this tradition, there was in 1976 an internship Elektroniktechologie and 1983 the Centre Electronic equipment manufacturing ( CPB ) was established. This research results in the fields of microelectronics, electroplating / PCB production and micro- actuators have been implemented.

Since 1976, for instance found at the College research on laser technology (laser development and material processing with laser radiation) instead. Here was the first continuous carbon dioxide laser in the GDR. The study tested the laser resistance of optical coatings and processing of silicon and ceramics by laser among others. The activities led in 1988 to the founding of laser application center ( LAZ ), which received significant amounts of investment as a Collaborating Centre of East German industry in the field of laser application. From 1997, the Laser Institute of Central Saxony eV (LIM ) and 2010 Laser Institute of the University of Mittweida ( LHM ) as a central scientific institution was born.

1991/92 survived the engineering tradition in the form of the Department of Mechanical Engineering / precision engineering again. As part of the newly incorporated economics education, the school changed its name from 1992 as University of Technology and Economics Mittweida ( FH) ( HTWM ).

With the founding of the site Roßwein there were in 1993 a Department of Social Work and other programs.

1998, the application for a name change to Mittweida ( FH) University of Applied Sciences was approved.

2003, the media programs were merged into a new media faculty.

In 2009 the company was renamed in Mittweida University of Applied Sciences under the new Saxony Higher Education Act. FH labeling is no longer required.

By 1992 the school had an independent right to promotion. Many professors are habilitated. The chairs feature, unlike other frequently at colleges usual, a large staff research associate and can therefore carry out externally funded research on a larger scale.
