Hohe Geest

The High Geest Geest refers to a landscape with scenic hikes through glacial deposits in the south of Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony in the north. She has not completely exact geographical boundaries.

Geological origin and nature

The High Geest consists of the Alt or terminal moraines of the coming from the north-east of Finland and Scandinavia glacier of the Warta Stage of the Saale glaciation (about 160000-100000 BC), which covered northern Germany. The High Geest is intersected by the up to twenty -mile-wide glacial valley of the Elbe, and can be assigned to the south of Schleswig -Holstein and the northern part of Lower Saxony, roughly through this natural limit. Hamburg is located mainly in the glacial valley of the Elbe, and has therefore no part in this landscape. High Geest in Schleswig -Holstein

This Geest, consisting of " High Geest " and " Niederer Geest ", is the mean natural landscape in Schleswig -Holstein. Part of it is the heath Itzehoer Geest.

High Geest in the north of Lower Saxony

In the northern Lower the High Geest is characterized by three mountain ranges:

  • Harburg ridge includes the Black Mountains ( Harburg Hills ) that Haake, the rose garden and Stuvenwald that Lohberge with the Brunswick Mountain, the Töps and the high mountain area around the Wilsede.
  • The Garlstorfer ridge extends from the Mascher Hall Onen and the book Wedel addition, in place over Brackelsberg and Egestorf.
  • The Lüneburg ridge starts at Radbruch and extends over Westergellersen and sharpening up Raubkammer.
