Hohenbergia

Hohenbergia stellata, part of their decorative inflorescence with red bracts and blue flowers.

The Hohenbergia are a genus of the subfamily Bromelioideae in the family Bromeliaceae ( Bromeliaceae ). In this genus there are about 54 species.

Dissemination

The genus has a disjunct distribution: some species occur only in the West Indies (especially Jamaica ), which most other types have their areas in Brazil, there are also species in Guatemala.

Because of their size is rare to find these types in private collections in areas where they can not be maintained in the open air by the occurrence of frosts. But in some tropical parks and gardens and also in almost all botanical gardens you will find this relatively undemanding but decorative plants, most commonly Hohenbergia stellata.

Description

The Hohenbergia species are hopper or tank bromeliads. There are usually large species with more than 1 m funnel diameters and inflorescences, which are high above 1 m. Most species are epiphytes. The rough leaves are always on the verge armored ( like all members of the Bromelioideae ), with a spiked tip, Saugschuppen are mainly seen on the underside of leaves. In the leaf hoppers often collect large amounts of water. In many craters there are small habitats with more species of algae and aquatic plants.

The flowers sit on many of the most respectable, long-lasting inflorescences ( inflorescences ), they are composed of peg-shaped part inflorescences. At the inflorescences often sit bright colored bracts ( bracts ); it dominates the color red (mostly with a blue component ), there are also white.

The flowers are more than short-stalked. The radial symmetry, the threefold flowers are often blue or blue-violet, there are also yellow and white. In the blue- flowered species of birds are the pollinators. The flowers are laterally compressed. The three sepals are fused into a short tube. The three petals are above the ovary free. The petals have at their base scales ( ligule ). There are two circles, each with three stamens present. The inner stamens are fused with the petals. The ovary is inferior.

Flowers formula:

The fruits are berries; when ripe, they are often highly colored; here is dominated by red to blue. The fruits are of animals (especially birds, rare monkeys and of Fledertieren ) eaten. The seeds are excreted undigested and pass with the feces on branches.

Systema vegetabilium: secundum classes, ordines, genera, species cum characteribus differentiis et synonymis Editio nova, speciebus inde from Editione XV detectis aucta et. .. locupletata. Stuttgardtiae ) erected. As lectotype 1923 Hohenbergia was stellata Schult. & Schult. f set. The genus name honors Hohenbergia a prince of the Kingdom of Württemberg, who was a patron of botany under the name of Hohenberg; Write to the Schultes ' noun in honorem reg. old.
