Holíč

Holic ( until 1946 slovak " Holič "; German Holitsch - also older white churches, Hungarian Holics ) is a town in northwestern Slovakia. The north in about 4 km of the city March flowing forms the border with the Czech Republic; over the river leads a border crossing to Hodonín. Until 2007, Cadastral Pláňavy belonged to the community.

History

The city was first mentioned in writing in 1205 as Wywar. 1736 the city of Franz Stephan ( HRR ), the husband of Maria Theresa, was acquired. This established, inter alia, porcelain and faience factory, which led to a growth of the city. Maria Theresa had rebuilt the castle Holič of a fortress in a summer palace of the Habsburgs.

Holics once flourishing Jewish community has completely disappeared in the Holocaust.

Population

According to the census of 2001, there were 11,416 inhabitants, 93.82 % of Slovaks, 3.68% Czechs, 0.99% Roma and 1.53 % others. The most represented confession was 66.36 % with Roman Catholic, followed by Protestant with 6.04%. 23.20 % had no religious affiliation and 2.94 % did not respond.
