Taking a holiday ( OHG Fira from Latin feria, festival day ',' religious celebration dedicated to non-working day '; celebrate this, original, let it rest for work ', OHG Firon from Latin fēriāri; see office hours, holidays) or feast day (Latin Festus this, one of the [ public ] religious celebration dedicated day '; see feast) is generally understood to be a non-working day with special holiday rest. All cultures and nations regularly celebrate certain events of social or religious rank. These are often particularly protected by the laws of the various States. One then speaks of public holidays.

Weekly recurring holidays and the weekly rest days; these have mostly religious causes: Judaism celebrates the commemoration of the seventh day of creation, God rested on the ( 2:2-3 EU), the Sabbath as the seventh day of the week; Christian week rest day is the thought of Christ's resurrection, the first day of the week, Sunday, Islamic Friday.

Mobile and fixed holidays

Fixed holidays are held (date) of the year is always the same day. Important valid in many European countries, fixed holidays are:

  • New Year (January 1 )
  • Epiphany (January 6 - Epiphany / Epiphany of the Lord )
  • The 1st of May of the work, working holiday, in the tradition of struggle day the labor movement day

The movable holidays are determined by the majority in the church year lunar calendar of the Jewish tradition. They held each year on a different calendar, but depend, apart from the Day of Atonement, the date of Easter from.

In many European and American countries, the following movable feast days are also regarded as public holidays:

  • Good Friday (two days before Easter Sunday )
  • Easter Sunday and Easter Monday ( to date, see date of Easter )
  • Ascension Day ( Ascension ) ( at the 39th day after Easter, therefore, always a Thursday)
  • Whit Monday ( the 50th day after Easter)
  • Trinity Sunday (Sunday after Pentecost )
  • Corpus Christi ( Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, on the 60th day after Easter, therefore, always a Thursday)
